BaggedIt › GPX route builder

Create GPX routes for UK hill walks

Drop pins, snap to real mountain paths, export the GPX, take the map offline.

BaggedIt’s route builder builds a GPX track from a few taps on the map for any hill in Scotland, England, Wales or Ireland. It routes over real footpaths and tracks rather than drawing straight lines, works out the distance, ascent and difficulty as you plot, and exports a standard GPX file that any watch, GPS unit or mapping app can follow.

Get the route builder

Free on iOS and Android. On your phone, open baggedit.net/get and it takes you to the right store.

How it works

  1. Pick your hills. Choose the summits you want to bag from any of the classification lists. They show on the map so you can plan around them.
  2. Drop pins. Tap the map to add points. Each leg snaps to real paths using a hiking-specific routing engine over OpenStreetMap data, with the option of a straight leg where there is no path.
  3. Check the numbers. Distance, total ascent, an elevation profile and a difficulty grade update as you go, so you can see what adding another summit costs before you commit.
  4. Save and export. Save the route to an adventure, then share the GPX to a Garmin, Suunto or Apple Watch, OS Maps, Komoot or anything else that reads GPX.
  5. Take it offline. Download the map pack for the area. Route, map and hill data all work with no signal.

Manual or recorded

Plan the route at home in Manual mode, or switch to Record on the day and let the GPS trace where you actually went, with the screen off and the app in the background. Both end up as GPX tracks on the same adventure, so you can compare the plan with the walk.

Difficulty grading

Every route is graded on the SAC hiking scale, from easy walking paths (T1) through mountain paths (T2–T3) to exposed alpine ground (T4 and above), based on the terrain the line crosses. It flags a scramble before you find it halfway up. It does not replace the forecast or your own judgement.

Import GPX too

Been sent a route by a friend, or downloaded one from a guidebook site? Open the GPX file on your phone and BaggedIt loads it into the builder. Edit it, see its stats, attach it to a day, and download the offline map for it.

Frequently asked

Is the route builder free?

Yes. Building, importing and exporting GPX routes is free.

Does it follow real paths or draw straight lines?

Real paths. The routing engine is tuned for hiking, so it prefers footpaths and tracks over roads and avoids roads wherever a path exists. Straight legs are available where there is no mapped path.

Which devices can I export to?

Anything that reads GPX: Garmin and Suunto watches, handheld GPS units, OS Maps, Komoot, AllTrails, Strava and more, via the standard share sheet.

Does it work without phone signal?

Saved routes and downloaded map packs work offline. Snapping new legs to paths needs a connection, so plan at home or in the car park and the rest of the day is signal-free.

Start with a hill

Every hill page on this site has a route-planning section. Try Ben Nevis, Snowdon, Scafell Pike or Slieve Donard, or browse the Munros, Wainwrights and Hewitts.
